Recycling

Recycling Background

After completing an in depth study on recycling options, the City of Camrose concluded that offering recycling services through Recycle with Centra-Cam Collection Depot is the most economical for City residents wishing to recycle such items as paper, empty milk jugs and tin cans.  This service is maintained through a $3.25 per month surcharge, which is added to all municipal utility bills, in addition to revenue collected from the sale of the recycled products.  Together these ensure a consistent level of funding for the program.

History

  • The Recycling Program began in 1992 primarily as a “drop off” collection site and included a $0.50 charge, on the water utility billings, to fund the program. The program utilized a small shed for product storage that was then transferred to a semi-trailer for transportation to commodity brokers for processing.

  • Tin Can recycling also began in 1992 utilizing a 6 yd bin for collection and transportation.

  • In 1993, a new “Double Garage - Drop Off” depot was constructed at the current site on 51 Avenue in an effort to deal with the increasing product volumes.

  • The Cardboard recycling program began in 1994 and expanded quickly to include collection bins at participating businesses.

  • A glass recycling bunker was constructed in 1995 to house clean/clear glass for yearly collection and transportation to processors.

  • In 1996 the “Recycling Program” under went a large expansion to include a compost collection compound and a backyard composter subsidy, milk jug collection, and the construction of a 4000 square foot “Recycling Drop Off Depot”. To support the expanded program the recycling fee was increased to $2.00.

  • An updated Operational Contract Agreement with Centra Cam Vocational Training Association was signed in June 1996.

  • In 2001, a City of Camrose “Education Promotions Coordinator” was hired to coordinate programs and projects related to waste management and recycling within the City.

  • In 2001, the facility began to accept high density polyethylene for plastic recycling.

  • In 2003, the facility began to accept e-waste and florescent light tubes for recycling.

  • City Council authorized the construction of an expanded depot in 2007 which doubled the size of the depot facility to just over 8100 square feet. Purchase and installation of a horizontal bailer allowing for increased productivity, was included in the depot expansion. To support the expanded facility, the recycling fee was increased to $3.25. This expansion was completed in 2008.
